ZEE5’s ₹120 Packs Make Regional OTT Truly Local
ZEE5’s ₹120 language packs reshape OTT access, making regional content affordable and personal for all.
ZEE5’s ₹120 “Apni Bhasha” Packs: A Game Changer for Regional OTT in India
The Indian streaming landscape is witnessing a major shift as ZEE5 rolls out its new “Apni Bhasha, Apni Kahaniyan” initiative, offering language-specific subscription packs for just ₹120 per month. This bold move is not only making regional content more affordable but also personalizing the OTT experience for millions of viewers across the country.
What’s New: Language-First, Wallet-Friendly Subscriptions
ZEE5’s new offering lets users subscribe to content in their preferred language—Hindi, Marathi, Bengali, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, or Kannada—without paying for shows and movies they don’t want. Each language pack costs ₹120 per month, except for the Hindi pack (which includes Punjabi and Bhojpuri content) at ₹220. For those who want everything, the all-access pack is available at ₹320 per month.
This is a big change from the traditional OTT model, where platforms like Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, and JioHotstar offer multi-language libraries but require users to pay for an all-access plan, regardless of their language needs. ZEE5’s model is unique in India’s OTT market, which also features regional-only platforms like ManoramaMAX (Malayalam), Planet Marathi (Marathi), Hoicholi (Bengali), and Aha (Tamil and Telugu), but none that offer a multi-language, pick-your-pack approach.
Why Go Regional? The Power of Local Stories
According to ZEE5’s regional business head Lloyd Xavier, the decision was driven by a deep understanding of how Indian viewers consume content. While global shows are popular, it’s local stories in local languages that truly drive engagement and subscriptions. In fact, non-Hindi content now accounts for about 50% of ZEE5’s viewership, with South Indian languages like Tamil and Malayalam making up 40-45% of that share.
The platform’s data shows that regional identity and cultural authenticity are key to winning over audiences, especially in tier 2 and tier 3 cities. For example, Tamil originals like “Ayali” and “Koose Muniswamy Veerappan” have become hits in Tamil Nadu, while Malayalam films like “Paappan” and “Identity” have seen completion rates as high as 60%.
Affordable, Accessible, and Family-Friendly
ZEE5’s pricing strategy is designed to match local realities. As Xavier explains, “If a single-screen theatre ticket is ₹60-80 in Tamil Nadu or Kerala, why would anyone pay ₹399 or ₹499 a month for OTT?” The ₹120 pack includes live TV, news, originals, and movies—making it a strong value proposition.
Another trend is the shift from mobile to connected TV (CTV) viewing, with about 50% of ZEE5’s users now watching on big screens with family. This has pushed the platform to focus on family-friendly content and premium storytelling.
Content Pipeline: Originals, Movies, and More
ZEE5 is doubling down on hyper-local content. For 2025, the platform has planned nine Tamil originals, seven Tamil movies, and 15 Malayalam launches, with over 30 new titles in these two languages alone. Many of these will be dubbed into other languages, broadening their appeal.
Blockbuster Fridays, another ZEE5 initiative, offers a new movie free every week to encourage regular viewing. Catch-Up TV lets users access paywalled shows for free after seven days, further boosting engagement.
Hyperlocal Marketing, Global Reach
ZEE5’s marketing is as targeted as its content. The platform uses digital and on-ground campaigns to reach specific states and cities, and also targets the Indian diaspora in countries like the US, Singapore, and Malaysia. While movies attract subscribers from metro areas, original series are especially popular in smaller towns and districts.
The Road Ahead: Redefining Regional OTT
With its language-first approach, affordable pricing, and focus on authentic storytelling, ZEE5 is setting a new standard for regional OTT in India. The platform’s strategy is clear: make streaming feel like home, no matter where you’re from or what language you speak.
