Amazon India Launching Quick Commerce Service "Tez" to Compete Rivals
Amazon India Set to Launch "Tez" Quick Commerce Service, Targeting Groceries and Essentials with Accelerated Rollout by Early 2025.
Amazon India is preparing to enter the quick commerce sector with a new service code-named "Tez," aiming for a launch as early as late December 2024 or early 2025. Sources indicate that while the initial rollout was planned for the first quarter of 2025, Amazon has fast-tracked the project. A final launch date is expected to be decided during the company’s review meeting in December. An official announcement could be made during Amazon’s annual Smbhav event.
The "Tez" service is anticipated to start with a focus on groceries and daily essentials, mirroring the operational model of its competitors. To facilitate rapid deliveries, Amazon is establishing dark stores, organizing stock-keeping units (SKUs), and building a comprehensive logistics network.
Amazon has already initiated hiring efforts for the project, referring to it as a "ground-up project in a growing e-commerce space" in various job listings. The official name for the quick commerce service is yet to be finalized.
In preparation for "Tez," Amazon India has undergone several organizational shifts. Samir Kumar, a long-time company executive, has taken over as the new head of Amazon India, following the departure of former head Manish Tiwary. Additionally, the company is relocating its headquarters from Bengaluru to a new facility near the airport in January 2025 to optimize operational costs.
Amazon’s entry into the quick commerce space will pit it against established players like Blinkit, Zepto, and Swiggy Instamart, who have already secured strong positions in the market. As the company gears up for the launch, it will face significant competition in this fast-growing sector.
