TRAI Appoints Harinder Kumar as Secretary for Two-Year Term

TRAI has appointed Harinder Kumar, currently Chief General Manager of BSNL Maharashtra, as its new Secretary for an initial two-year term.

Harinder Kumar has been appointed as the new Secretary of the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) for an initial period of two years.

The Indian Telecom Service (ITS) officer Kumar would be joining the telecom regulator on deputation under foreign service terms, said an official communication issued by TRAI on June 10.

Moves from BSNL to TRAI:

Before his appointment, Kumar was serving as Chief General Manager (CGM) of Maharashtra circle of Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL).

He will now take over as Secretary at TRAI, one of the key administrative posts of the regulator, which is responsible for overseeing the organisation’s operational and regulatory functions.

TRAI in its official communication said Kumar has been offered the post on deputation for an initial period of two years.

Key Administrative Role:

The Secretary is a key contributor in facilitating the policy, administrative and coordination role of the regulator and works closely with the TRAI leadership on regulatory issues concerning the telecommunications and digital communications sectors.

Kumar’s appointment brings into the administrative fold of the regulator a senior telecom executive with vast experience in the sector.

Kumar arrives at a time when TRAI is embroiled in a number of important policy and regulatory debates.

The regulator has been examining issues concerning internet-based television services, drawing responses from broadcasters, OTT platforms and other industry stakeholders.

TRAI has also been looking into the complaints by telecom operators over spam and unsolicited messages on over-the-top (OTT) messaging platforms.
