Godrej Consumer Outlines New Growth Strategy Under CEO Aasif Malbari
Godrej Consumer Products targets double-digit volume growth under new CEO Aasif Malbari through core execution, ₹200 crore R&D investments, and portfolio expansion.
Newly appointed Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Aasif Malbari has laid out a sharper growth and execution plan for Godrej Consumer Products Limited (GCPL), anchoring the FMCG major’s ambition around sustained double-digit underlying volume growth.
Malbari, who officially took charge on August 12 succeeding Sudhir Sitapati, outlined his core operational priorities during his first investor interaction. His strategy focuses on fixing execution gaps, strengthening the company's core portfolio, and committing larger financial resources toward research, digital marketing, and innovation.
Beyond Soaps: Scaling High-Penetration Categories
A central pillar of the strategy involves expanding growth beyond GCPL’s traditional soap franchise by pushing harder into categories with higher scope for market penetration. The management is focusing resources on several key growth segments:
- Air care and laundry liquids
- Hair colour and deodorants
- Sexual wellness, bolstered by the 2023 acquisition of Raymond Consumer Care's Park Avenue and KamaSutra brands
Malbari’s long-term task will be converting this widened portfolio into consistent, volume-led top-line growth while protecting overall profitability.
Fueling R&D and Accelerating Digital Engagement
To support new product development and brand expansion, GCPL is planning a dedicated ₹200 crore research and development facility. Alongside increased R&D capabilities, the company is stepping up its digital marketing spend to sharpen consumer engagement, improve execution, and drive faster adoption of new offerings.
Supply Chain Clean-Up: General-Trade Inventory Trim
To enforce inventory discipline and clean up the distribution pipeline, GCPL plans to reduce its general-trade inventory by ₹125 crore to ₹150 crore over the next three quarters. The move aims to streamline distribution and fix core operational bottlenecks across the domestic market.
Financial Background and Investor Reactions
The operational reset follows solid top-line performance in the first quarter of FY27, during which GCPL posted a 9% underlying volume growth, a 19% year-on-year revenue increase, and an 11% rise in profit.
Despite the initial operational strength, markets reacted cautiously to the near-term strategic shifts. On September 3, GCPL shares fell as much as 5%, touching their lowest level in nearly four years as investors weighed the short-term impact of the distribution inventory correction, higher planned investments, and persistent input cost pressures.
For Malbari, the immediate focus remains on strong operational execution: rebuilding core momentum in India while building enough scale across newer categories to achieve GCPL’s double-digit volume target.
