Netflix is starting to roll out a permanent update that will let many users on shared accounts associate their own email addresses with individual profiles, allowing them greater control over access to the account and the profiles themselves.

The feature, which began rolling out on June 15, 2026, applies to most profiles on a shared subscription but not to children’s profiles. Up until this point, every profile on a Netflix account used the email address of the main account holder to log in and verify.

With the new system, each profile owner can link a different email address to their profile while still being part of the same household subscription. It allows users to receive their own verification codes for signing in, which is useful for logging in on a new device and managing account access without the primary subscriber.

Privacy Concerns:

The update also lets users control profile-specific settings such as subtitle language, audio preferences and display options, Netflix said. Suggestions will continue to be based on the watch history of each individual, but connecting a personal email account is likely to make the experience even more personalised.

Subscribers can add an email address by going to the Profile Settings menu or by clicking a link in an email notification from Netflix. A Netflix spokesperson told Ars Technica the feature is a permanent update, and began rolling out June 15.

The rollout has received a mixed response from users. Some liked the idea of being able to control their own profile without having to depend on the primary account holder, while some questioned the need to add an additional email address to their profile.

The update has also prompted privacy concerns. Netflix's privacy policy states that users' email addresses may be shared with marketing and advertising partners, and users who link an email address could receive promotional communications from the company. However, subscribers can opt out of receiving marketing emails.

Netflix also clarified that household members who link an email address to a profile will retain access to that profile and the personal information associated with it.

Separately, reports claiming Netflix would introduce mandatory multi-factor authentication for all subscribers from July 7 have been dismissed. According to Ars Technica, the authentication requirement applies only to business partner accounts and will not affect regular consumer subscriptions.
