Google’s Gemini App Adds Personal Context, Temporary Chats, Privacy Controls

Google is introducing new personalization and privacy features to its Gemini app, aiming to deliver more relevant AI responses while giving users greater control over their data.

The update enables Gemini to reference past conversations to learn user preferences, producing more tailored and context-aware answers. When enabled, this “personal context” setting allows the AI to remember key details—such as favorite books, creative ideas, or hobbies—making interactions feel more like an ongoing collaboration. The feature is rolling out now for Gemini’s 2.5 Pro model in select countries, with wider availability planned.

For users who prefer one-off interactions, Google has launched “Temporary Chat,” which lets people hold private conversations without influencing future responses or training AI models. These chats are excluded from recent chat history and Gemini Apps Activity, and are deleted after 72 hours.

Additionally, Google is updating data settings. Starting September 2, 2025, “Gemini Apps Activity” will be renamed “Keep Activity,” with users able to opt in or out of having select future uploads—such as files and photos—used to improve Google services. A separate control now allows users to decide whether audio, video, and screen shares are used for AI training.

Google says these changes reflect its commitment to transparency and user choice, providing tools to manage privacy while enhancing the Gemini experience.
