WhatsApp's Head Will Cathcart Hints at Ads in Channels and Status
WhatsApp Tests Voice Messages and Stickers, Contemplates Ads in Status: Will Cathcart Discusses Potential Features, Excludes Ads in Inbox
WhatsApp, a prominent messaging platform, is on the verge of expanding its feature set with the potential addition of voice messages and stickers. WhatsApp's Head, Will Cathcart, hinted at the platform's contemplation of introducing advertisements within the Status feature. In a recent interview with a Brazilian publication, Cathcart provided insights into WhatsApp's advertising strategy. It is worth noting that WhatsApp does not intend to display ads in users' inboxes; however, Cathcart indicated that ads may find their place in other sections, such as Status or Channels.
Cathcart stated that advertisements could potentially be integrated into Channels, offering users subscription-based access, exclusivity for paid members, or a promotional tool for channel owners. Although Cathcart discussed these possibilities, it is crucial to highlight that this does not confirm their imminent implementation. WhatsApp had previously conducted experiments with ads in the beta version's Status segment in 2019, but these experiments did not transition to the public version.
Furthermore, WhatsApp revealed that it had taken action against a considerable number of accounts in India in September, complying with IT regulations. The company reported that 7.11 million accounts faced repercussions, with 2.57 million accounts being banned proactively, even before receiving any user reports.
The period from September 1, 2023, to September 30, 2023, witnessed a total of 7,111,000 WhatsApp accounts being banned, including 2,571,000 accounts that faced proactive bans, as disclosed in WhatsApp's report. This highlights WhatsApp's commitment to maintaining a secure and trustworthy platform while actively exploring enhancements to its feature offerings.
