Engineering services company Quest Global has launched a national workplace initiative to raise more awareness of pregnancy loss and its impact on women in the workforce.

The ‘Break the Silence’ campaign is supported by original research carried out with YouGov and seeks to frame miscarriage not only as a personal health problem but also as a workplace and workforce issue that is often not discussed.

Research Highlights Workplace Challenges:

The initiative is built around the Cost of Silence report, which surveyed over 2,000 women and 200 male managers between the ages of 25 and 39 in the STEM, technology, engineering and corporate sectors.

39% of working women are afraid of the negative impact a miscarriage would have on their career or job if they disclose it at work. 40% of working women don’t talk about their miscarriage experience because they are afraid of being judged.

The report also found that 35% of women would consider leaving their jobs if their employer did not provide support after pregnancy loss.

Productivity and Retention Concerns:

The effects, the study found, go beyond employee wellbeing.

Among the women surveyed, three in four said pregnancy loss impacted their confidence and work performance, and many continued to work without discussing their experience.

The report also found that supportive policies in the workplace can have a positive impact on engagement, with 48% of women saying they would feel more comfortable speaking up if support were available, and 43% saying they would feel greater loyalty to their employer.

Commenting on the initiative, Ajit Prabhu, Co-founder & CEO, Quest Global said, “The findings point towards a significant, but under-reported issue in the workplace.

“For too long, pregnancy loss has remained invisible in the workplace, leaving many women to navigate grief in silence while continuing to perform. Our research shows that the cost of silence is significant and measurable: in productivity, confidence, retention and careers,” he said.
