Apple Brings Sleep Apnoea Detection To Apple Watch Users In India
Apple has introduced sleep apnoea notifications for Apple Watch users and at-home hearing tests for AirPods Pro users in India.
Apple has launched two new health features for customers in India as part of its growing health tech ecosystem: sleep apnoea notifications on Apple Watch and at-home hearing tests on AirPods Pro.
The new sleep apnoea notification feature uses the Apple Watch accelerometer to detect small wrist movements which are associated with disruptions in normal breathing patterns during sleep, according to a report by Mint.
The system is designed to detect symptoms related to sleep apnoea, a condition where breathing repeatedly stops and starts during sleep and often goes undiagnosed.

Sleep Health Monitoring:
Apple said more than 1 billion people worldwide suffer from sleep apnoea, with untreated cases possibly raising the risk of hypertension, type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular diseases over time.
The feature measures breathing disturbance data over a 30-day period and notifies users if consistent signs of moderate to severe sleep apnoea are found.
Users can also generate a PDF report which includes trends of breathing disturbances for the last three months, which can be shared with healthcare professionals.
In the Health app, users can also track breathing disturbance data over a month, six months and a year and access information about sleep apnoea and its impact on health.
Apple says it developed the sleep apnoea detection system using machine learning models trained on datasets derived from clinical-grade sleep apnoea testing.
Clinical validation studies found that every participant identified by the algorithm had at least mild sleep apnoea, the company said.

AirPods Hearing Feature:
Apple is also adding a feature to AirPods Pro users to perform a clinical-grade hearing test, on top of sleep monitoring.
The feature lets users take a five-minute hearing assessment using AirPods Pro connected to a compatible iPhone or iPad.
Apple says the hearing test is based on pure-tone audiometry, a standard clinical way of evaluating hearing ability.
