Bombay HC Allows Preity Zinta to Sue Google, Meta Over AI Deepfakes
The Bombay High Court has allowed Preity Zinta to file a civil suit against Google, Meta and other online entities over the alleged unauthorised use of her identity through AI-generated content, including deepfakes and chatbot personas.
Actor Preity Zinta has received the green signal from Bombay High Court to file a civil suit against Google LLC, Meta Platforms and a few other online entities for allegedly misusing her identity without her consent through AI-generated content.
According to reports, the order is a significant development in the ongoing legal debate around deepfakes, personality rights and the responsibility of technology platforms in India.
Justice Abhay Ahuja granted leave to Zinta’s petition under clause XII of the Letters Patent to file the suit in the Bombay High Court. The petition was disposed of by the grant of procedural relief.

Deepfake Legal Battle:
The suit said Zinta has raised concerns about the creation, hosting and dissemination of AI-generated content that allegedly uses her identity without consent. The actor has complained about manipulated images, internet memes and AI chatbot personas that she says have been used without authorisation.
Advocate Rohan Kadam, arguing for Zinta, submitted that the content violated her personality rights, copyright and moral rights under the Copyright Act, 1957. The petition also claims the unauthorised use of her likeness has damaged her reputation, goodwill and professional standing.
Kadam argued that Zinta primarily resides and works in Mumbai and her rights of personality and commercial goodwill are attached to the city in law, thus giving Bombay High Court territorial jurisdiction over the matter.
While the alleged infringing content is available worldwide on internet-based platforms, the court accepted that a substantial part of the cause of action arose in Mumbai and was therefore maintainable before the Bombay High Court.
