Perplexity Makes $34.5B All-Cash Bid to Acquire Chrome
AI startup Perplexity offers $34.5B in all-cash deal for Google’s Chrome browser amid antitrust pressures, aiming to reshape the browser market with AI integration.
Perplexity Bids $34.5 Billion to Acquire Google’s Chrome Browser
In a surprise move, AI company Perplexity has made an all-cash $34.5 billion offer to acquire Google’s Chrome browser, filing the bid on August 12.
The proposal arrives as Google faces mounting antitrust pressure in the U.S., including a Department of Justice case that could force it to divest Chrome. Perplexity’s package promises to keep Chromium open source, invest $3 billion in infrastructure over two years, and retain Google Search as Chrome’s default.
For a startup valued at roughly $18 billion, the bid is bold. Perplexity says it has secured full funding commitments from major investors. Judge Amit Mehta’s ruling on potential remedies for Google’s antitrust case is still pending.
Strategic Fit for Perplexity
The company’s AI-first browser, Comet, already runs on Chromium and integrates AI tools directly into the browsing experience. Acquiring Chrome would give Perplexity access to over 3 billion users worldwide, instantly expanding its reach and positioning its AI stack for mainstream adoption.
Industry Implications
Google has stated it will fight any forced separation, warning of risks to user security and innovation. Meanwhile, other tech players—including OpenAI, Yahoo, and Apollo Global Management—are reportedly monitoring the situation.
For marketers, the potential deal could reshape the internet’s gateway. If Perplexity gains control of Chrome, it may influence how search, advertising, and user data personalisation evolve in an AI-driven era. Even if unsuccessful, the bid underscores how antitrust pressures are emboldening challengers to target Big Tech’s most entrenched platforms.
