Trent Plans Aggressive Westside Expansion, Eyes 100 New Stores a Year

Tata Group’s retail arm Trent Ltd. is reportedly planning a major expansion of its premium fashion chain Westside, with a target to open up to 100 new stores per year.

The planned rollout is a sharp turn up from the company’s current pace of 10-15 store openings a year. Westside has about 300 stores at the end of the last financial year and is now looking to consolidate in the metro cities and expand to new markets such as the northeastern region of India.

Growth Strategy:

Westside, which sells apparel, beauty, home decor, footwear and accessories, is aiming to drive growth through a larger product offering and better in-store experiences.

Parti says that “the retailer has been refreshing its merchandising and store layouts to be more fashion-forward and to encourage impulse buys.”

Beyond Zudio:

The move comes as Trent looks to diversify its growth engines amid slowing momentum at its value fashion chain Zudio, which is facing increasing competition from players such as Reliance Industries and the Aditya Birla Group.

The larger retail space has also been working its way through a period of softer discretionary spending, as consumers remain cautious in the face of inflationary pressures.

Earlier this year, Trent’s board had approved a fund raise of Rs.2,500 crore for its next phase of growth.

The capital will be used to expand Westside’s physical retail network, boost its e-commerce operations and support its international expansion initiatives.

The company is also expanding the use of artificial intelligence throughout its operations to improve the design of products and to improve efficiency in the supply chain.

AI will speed up merchandise development and help Westside react more quickly to shifts in fashion trends.

Some analysts remain cautious about consumer spending, but others believe Westside is well positioned to be the next big growth driver for Trent, helped by better merchandising, store design and premium brand positioning.
