Meta Platforms is planning to start testing an artificial intelligence-powered pendant within the next year as part of a broader strategy to expand its wearable technology portfolio and reduce losses in its hardware business, a report by The Information said.

The reported plans were included in an internal memo from Alex Himel, Meta’s vice president of wearables, laying out the company’s roadmap for next-generation AI-enabled devices.

The parent company of Facebook and Instagram is also planning a big expansion of its AI glasses portfolio and is looking at a new enterprise-focused offering called “Wearables for Work”.

Meta did not respond publicly to the report.

Wearables Growth Push:

The move comes as the company pushes ahead with big bets on wearables and artificial intelligence despite mounting losses at its hardware division.

Meta’s Reality Labs unit, which oversees the company’s virtual reality, augmented reality and wearable technology efforts, posted a loss of $4.03 billion on revenue of $402 million in the first quarter.

Meta is aiming for sales of 10 million wearables in the second half of 2026, the report said, through a combination of new product launches and wider global availability.

The company already works with EssilorLuxottica brands Ray-Ban and Oakley to create AI-enabled smart glasses.

AI Wearables Push:

Meta’s next AI pendant may be the company’s next step toward building wearable devices that bring AI closer to people’s daily interactions.

The initiative is built on Meta’s acquisition of AI wearables startup Limitless last year.

Limitless is best known for its pendant-style device that uses AI to record and transcribe real-world conversations.

The deal was meant to accelerate Meta’s push into new categories of AI-enabled wearables beyond smart glasses and headsets.

The new plans highlight how Meta is doubling down on AI-powered hardware as it competes with other tech companies racing to make artificial intelligence more accessible through everyday consumer devices.
