Meta has launched paid subscription plans for Instagram, Facebook and WhatsApp, broadening its monetisation strategy across its flagship apps.

The company announced the rollout on Instagram, with Naomi Gleit detailing the features included in the new "Plus" subscription plans.

Facebook Plus and Instagram Plus will be available at a cost of $3.99 a month, the company said, while WhatsApp Plus will be priced at $2.99 a month.

According to a report by the Economic Times, the subscription plans are being rolled out globally now.

Premium Features Rollout:

Instagram Plus introduces extra features focused on Stories, engagement insights and profile customisation.

Subscribers will be able to see how many users rewatched their Stories, create unlimited audience lists, increase Story visibility beyond 24 hours, and view Stories anonymously without appearing on the viewers list.

The plan also offers weekly spotlight boosts, animated Super Heart reactions, custom app icons, personalized bio fonts and more profile pinning options.

Facebook Plus offers similar options for customizing your profile and engaging socially.

Meanwhile WhatsApp Plus is geared towards personalisation tools including custom themes, premium stickers, personalised ringtones and extra pinned chats.

Meta said it is also developing other subscription products for businesses, creators and AI-related services.

The subscription push comes as investors are increasingly scrutinising the company’s growing investments in artificial intelligence infrastructure.

Meta One Expansion:

Meta added that it expects to spend between $125bn and $145bn this year, primarily on the development of AI data centres and infrastructure.

Shares of Meta gained nearly 3 percent following the news.

Gleit also said Meta plans to combine its various subscription offerings under one bigger umbrella brand, “Meta One,” over time.

In 2023, to comply with European Union privacy rules, the company launched paid ad-free versions of Facebook and Instagram in Europe, allowing users to choose between a free ad-supported experience or paid ad-free access.

The latest release highlights how the big tech platforms are looking to diversify their revenue sources beyond advertising through subscription-based features, creator tools, and premium user experiences.
