Apple has secured regulatory approval to launch its Apple Intelligence suite in China, overcoming a major hurdle that had stalled the rollout of its artificial intelligence features in one of its most important markets.

Apple’s generative AI service has been cleared by the Cyberspace Administration of China (CAC), Bloomberg reports. It means the iPhone maker can roll out Apple Intelligence in the country via collaborations with Chinese tech titans Alibaba and Baidu.

Some of the Apple Intelligence features including text generation, image generation and content understanding across Apple's operating systems will be powered by Alibaba's Qwen AI model under the deal. Baidu will provide more AI features aimed at Chinese users.

China AI Push:

The approval brings Apple on equal footing with local smartphone manufacturers such as Huawei and Xiaomi that have already obtained regulatory approval for their AI-powered services. Apple Intelligence has been adapted to meet China’s regulations for generative AI.

Apple announced Apple Intelligence globally in 2024, but its launch in China was delayed because the country requires all large language models and generative AI services to be approved by the government before they can be offered to consumers.

The approval is expected to bolster Apple’s position in the Chinese smartphone market, where local brands have increasingly distinguished themselves with AI-powered features. iPhones had been at a competitive disadvantage versus several domestic competitors without Apple Intelligence.

The development also boosted investor sentiment. Shares of Alibaba and Baidu rose after both companies confirmed their participation in Apple's AI ecosystem in China, underscoring the strategic significance of the partnerships.
