Several companies across India are cautiously bringing back hybrid work arrangements after Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged citizens and businesses to reduce fuel consumption amid geopolitical tensions in West Asia and growing pressure on global energy markets.

According to a report by CNBC-TV18, HDFC Bank has introduced a temporary hybrid work policy for employees working in corporate office and business-enabling functions.

Under the arrangement, eligible employees can work from home for up to two days a week, while branch operations and customer-facing functions will continue to operate normally.

The report, citing people familiar with the development, stated that the policy is currently being implemented on a trial basis and is expected to be reviewed after 30 days.

Companies Go Hybrid:

According to the report, the bank has not positioned the move as a long-term change in workplace policy but as a short-term response linked to the broader economic environment and the government’s appeal for fuel conservation.

The development follows Prime Minister Modi’s address on May 10, during which he encouraged citizens to adopt fuel-saving measures such as work-from-home arrangements, virtual meetings, reduced travel, carpooling and greater use of public transport.

Several companies across sectors have reportedly responded with cautious support for similar measures.

According to CNBC-TV18, Mankind Pharma has reduced executive travel and shifted leadership meetings to virtual platforms. Consulting firms including Deloitte and EY, along with companies such as RPG Group, Tata Motors and Mercedes-Benz India, are continuing with existing hybrid work arrangements for eligible employees.

Meanwhile, employee representative organisation NITES has reportedly written to the Labour Ministry seeking an official advisory encouraging work-from-home arrangements across the IT and IT-enabled services sectors wherever operationally feasible. The organisation argued that wider adoption of remote work could help reduce fuel demand, ease traffic congestion and lower commuting-related stress during the ongoing situation.
