Walmart-backed Flipkart is fast-tracking the expansion of its quick commerce business, saying it will grow its micro-fulfillment centres network to 1,500 from 1,000 by the end of 2026, as competition heats up in India’s fast-growing instant-delivery space.

Flipkart Minutes, the company’s quick commerce service, has crossed the 1,000 micro-fulfillment centres mark in over 130 cities in two years of its launch, the company said. The platform is now planning to add another 500 centres in the coming months to strengthen its presence against rivals Blinkit, Swiggy Instamart, Zepto and Amazon.

The expansion comes as Flipkart continues to prepare for an eventual stock market listing in Mumbai, though the company has not given a timeline for the proposed initial public offering.

Smaller cities fuel momentum:

A significant share of Flipkart Minutes' growth is coming from non-metro markets. “Over 70% of the platform’s footprint in 130-plus cities is in smaller towns and cities,” said Kunal Gupta, Head of Flipkart Minutes.

“The value conscious shopping behaviour of consumers in these markets often leads to larger orders,” Gupta said.

The company has aggressively expanded into states like Bihar and other emerging markets. Flipkart said that orders on Minutes have increased fivefold in the past year and sales in smaller cities have grown 42 times. These markets have seen a YOY growth of over 4,000% with expansion to another 90 cities.

Gupta said the demand is increasingly going beyond groceries into categories such as electronics, beauty and personal care, speaking to TechCrunch. Customer retention has gone up significantly, he said, with users shopping more on both Flipkart Minutes and the company’s main e-commerce platform.

Race for scale:

India’s quick commerce market has become one of the most competitive consumer internet sectors in the country as companies race to deliver products in minutes through networks of neighbourhood warehouses.

As per Datum Intelligence, Blinkit has over 2,200 stores and is handling about 3 million orders per day, while Swiggy Instamart has over 1,100 stores and is handling around 1.25 million orders per day.

Flipkart is currently processing about 820,000 orders a day, although its average order value of ₹700 is higher than its larger rivals.

Flipkart will become India’s second-largest quick commerce network by count of micro-fulfillment centres soon, behind Blinkit, based on its existing infrastructure and announced expansion plans.

Amazon will scale up And competition is expected to intensify further. Now with plans to expand to 100 cities, operate more than 1,000 micro-fulfillment centres and move beyond grocery deliveries.
