Dream11 Exits as Team India’s Lead Jersey Sponsor
Dream11 and BCCI mutually part ways on ₹358 crore jersey sponsorship after the real-money gaming ban, prompting a search for a new sponsor.
In a significant shake-up for cricket sponsorship, Dream11 has pulled out as the lead jersey sponsor of the Indian cricket team. The decision follows the enactment of the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Bill 2025, which bans real-money and fantasy sports platforms, disrupting Dream11’s core business model and making continued sponsorship untenable.
The End of a Big Deal
Dream11 entered into a three-year sponsorship contract with the BCCI in July 2023, valued at ₹358 crore, a deal that included payments of ₹3 crore for home matches and ₹1 crore for away matches. The agreement was scheduled to run till early 2026. However, the company initiated discussions to terminate the deal early, after its business was severely impacted by the new law, which bans real-money gaming, advertising, and sponsorships.
BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia confirmed that the board would fully comply with the regulatory framework and would not enter into partnerships with entities in restricted sectors.
Timing and Impact
This parting of ways comes at an awkward juncture—just weeks before the Asia Cup, set to begin in September. With little time to onboard a replacement, there’s a real possibility that Team India might wear unbranded jerseys during the tournament.
To secure a new sponsor, the BCCI is reportedly preparing to float a fresh tender, with interest already building from conglomerates like Tata, Reliance, Adani, as well as auto and fintech brands including Toyota, Zerodha, and other high-profile players.
The Jersey Sponsorship Challenge
Cricket jersey sponsorship has historically been a high-stakes spotlight for brands — yet many face steep challenges. Business magnate Harsh Goenka recently quipped that sponsoring Team India is the “real brand survival test,” highlighting the pressures behind such high-visibility partnerships. Notable past sponsors—Sahara, Star India, Oppo, and Byju’s—have all navigated complex situations during their tenures.
What’s at Stake for the BCCI
-
Financial Implications: Losing a ₹358-crore deal just as major tournaments approach presents a revenue gap that may impact future marketing spends.
-
Logistical Pressure: With jerseys already produced featuring Dream11 branding, there’s urgency to finalize a new sponsor or risk jerseys being worn without a logo.
-
Trust & Compliance: BCCI’s swift adherence to new regulations underscores its commitment to governance and maintaining credibility in light of rising scrutiny.
-
Sponsorship Strategy Shift: The board now faces the task of identifying a brand that not only delivers high visibility but also aligns with legal and reputational norms.
