AM Green and the V.O. Chidambaranar Port Authority (VOCPA) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to jointly develop VOC Port in Tuticorin as a green ammonia production and marine bunkering hub.

The agreement, signed on May 28, 2026, aims to support India's ambitions in green hydrogen and sustainable maritime fuels while strengthening the country's position in the global clean energy supply chain.

Green Ammonia Bunkering Plans:

Under the partnership, AM Green and VOCPA plan to develop up to 200 KTPA (kilotonnes per annum) of green ammonia marine bunkering capacity by 2029-30.

The project is expected to involve an investment of approximately Rs 2,000 crore.

The two organisations also see the potential to expand bunkering capacity to 500 KTPA by 2035, representing a total investment of around Rs 5,000 crore, subject to market demand and wider adoption of low-carbon marine fuels.

The partners will explore pilot bunkering operations and jointly develop infrastructure aligned with international standards for green ammonia handling and supply.

The MoU also reinforces AM Green's plans to establish a 1 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) green ammonia production facility near the port.

The proposed facility is expected to attract an investment of around Rs 15,000 crore, with VOCPA providing support for the project.

According to the company, a significant portion of the required land acquisition for the green hydrogen and ammonia complex has already been completed.

Renewable Energy Investment:

The development is also expected to catalyse additional investments in renewable energy generation.

AM Green said the project could enable approximately Rs 35,000 crore worth of investment in renewable power infrastructure required to support green hydrogen and ammonia production.

The initiative forms part of the company's broader goal of developing more than 4 MTPA of green ammonia production capacity across India by 2030.
