IKEA India Accelerates Growth with Local Sourcing and New Store Formats

IKEA India is entering a new phase of accelerated growth, signaling a bold vision for the next decade. After a careful, measured first phase of expansion, the Swedish home furnishings giant is now preparing for a faster, sharper rollout strategy in India, one of its fastest-growing markets globally.

Unlike its initial approach, which relied primarily on opening large-format stores every few years, IKEA India now plans to combine flagship stores, smaller city-center outlets, planning studios, and a robust digital presence. The goal is to reach more urban households faster and provide a seamless customer experience across both offline and online platforms.

Patrik Antoni, CEO of IKEA India, says:
“We’re not just opening stores; we’re building a connected ecosystem. Each touchpoint large or small, digital or physical is part of a broader strategy that strengthens supply chains and customer reach.”

A key pillar of this expansion is local sourcing. Currently, 30% of IKEA India’s portfolio comes from Indian suppliers. The company aims to increase this to 50% by 2030, leveraging India’s growing manufacturing capabilities while also reducing supply chain costs and delivery times.

To support this, IKEA plans to establish a design center focused on Indian needs, using sustainable materials and recycled inputs. This approach not only caters to local consumer preferences but also integrates Indian expertise into IKEA’s global ecosystem.

Logistics and sustainability form another cornerstone of the strategy. IKEA India has already established a distribution center in Pune to serve western and southern markets, with a rail-linked hub coming up in Gurugram to strengthen northern operations. Impressively, more than 90% of its delivery fleet in India is electric, with the goal of achieving 100% by 2030, reflecting IKEA’s commitment to sustainable operations.

This second wave of expansion comes at a critical time. Global supply chains remain unpredictable, with rising tariffs and trade uncertainties. India, in this scenario, acts as a strategic anchor for IKEA both as a retail market and a reliable sourcing hub. Jesper Brodin, CEO of Ingka Group (IKEA’s largest franchisee), has highlighted India’s dual role as a resilient production center and a rapidly growing consumer market.

For Indian consumers, this translates to greater accessibility, faster delivery, and locally relevant product options. Whether it’s a compact city-center outlet or a planning studio that helps customers design their dream home virtually, IKEA is making its products more approachable and personalized.

The second wave represents a commitment to India’s market, sustainability, and local talent. By integrating global standards with Indian insights, IKEA India is positioning itself to not just grow faster, but also to remain relevant, adaptive, and sustainable in an evolving retail landscape.

As IKEA India scales up, the focus is clear: more choice, more convenience, and stronger connection to local lifestyles. For a country with a rapidly urbanizing population and a growing appetite for home solutions, IKEA’s next chapter promises to be transformative not just for the company, but for Indian retail as a whole.
