BCCI Bans Smart Sunglasses In Restricted IPL Areas Over Security Concerns
BCCI’s ACSU has banned smart sunglasses inside restricted IPL match-day areas, citing security and anti-corruption concerns.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India has banned players, support staff and match officials from carrying or using smart sunglasses inside restricted match-day areas during the ongoing Indian Premier League 2026.
The board’s Anti-Corruption and Security Unit sent an advisory to IPL franchises.
According to a report by the Story Board 18, the ACSU said several companies have marketed smart eyewear products to players and team personnel in recent months. The board said these devices can also be used for live streaming, sending and receiving text messages, making audio and video calls using Wi-Fi or mobile data connectivity.

Wearable Tech Ban:
The ACSU said smart sunglasses are considered communication devices and audio-video recording devices under the Player and Match Officials Area (PMOA) Minimum Standards.
Resultantly, possession or use within PMOAs has been prohibited.
The ban applies to high security zones like dressing rooms, dugouts and other restricted team areas on match days.
Players and support staff have been told by the board to hand over smart sunglasses and other wearable devices to the Security Liaison Officer before going into restricted areas.
These gadgets need to be handed in along with mobile phones, smart watches and other banned communication devices.

The ACSU warned that non-compliance with the directive would be considered a violation of PMOA rules and could lead to disciplinary action under IPL 2026 rules.
The latest measure comes as there has been increased scrutiny of technology use and conduct inside restricted match-day zones.
Earlier this season, Romi Bhinder was fined ₹1 lakh and issued a warning after being seen using a mobile phone in the dug-out during a match involving Rajasthan Royals.
The IPL has also faced several disciplinary and security issues this season, prompting the BCCI to tighten its protocols on player conduct and access control.
The board had already put in place tighter restrictions, including restrictions on late-night outings without security clearance and restrictions on guests visiting hotel rooms of players.
