Instagram is testing a new feature that allows users to add separate captions to individual photos and videos within carousel posts.

The update was first spotted through screenshots shared by Instagram user Binita Shah. According to the screenshots, some users received a pop-up notification inside Instagram’s post composer informing them that they “can now add a caption for each photo or video in your post.”

Instagram Expands Carousel Features:

The feature could expand how creators, influencers and brands use carousel posts by allowing them to provide more context and information for each individual image or video within a single upload.

Carousel posts are already considered one of Instagram’s stronger engagement formats. In 2024, Adam Mosseri said carousel posts help improve engagement and reach because they encourage users to spend more time on the platform while offering multiple opportunities to capture attention within one post.

The latest test appears to be part of Instagram’s broader efforts to expand carousel functionality. Earlier this year, the platform introduced a feature allowing users to rearrange carousel posts even after publishing them.

The addition of individual captions could further increase the flexibility of carousel content, particularly for storytelling, tutorials, product showcases and multi-image brand campaigns.

The feature is currently being tested with selected users, and Instagram has not yet announced a wider rollout timeline.
