The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) is in talks with Meta Platforms and Google to include spam complaints logged on platforms like WhatsApp and Google’s native phone dialler in telecom operators’ complaint systems, Mint reported, citing people familiar with the development.

The planned integration will give telecom operators and the regulator access to user-reported spam data from these platforms, allowing them to act more quickly against repeat offenders involved in unsolicited calls and messages. This will improve spam detection and enforcement.

As per the report, TRAI has held several rounds of discussions with Meta and Google to develop a mechanism that would link spam complaints filed through WhatsApp and Google’s inbuilt phone dialler with the telecom industry’s Distributed Ledger Technology (DLT) platform and TRAI’s Do Not Disturb (DND) portal.

Spam Integration:

Today, the DLT platform is used by telecom operators for the registration of telemarketers and tracking of commercial communications. Consumers can report unsolicited promotional calls and SMSes on the DND portal.

Once implemented, the integration could enhance coordination among the technology platforms, telecom operators and the regulator, and help the authorities identify habitual spammers more effectively and take prompt enforcement action.

We’re in active discussions with Meta and Google on how to deal with spam. TRAI wants WhatsApp to share the spam data with telecom operators for better action," Mint quoted a person privy to the discussions as saying.

The regulator is still in discussions with the two companies as it develops the proposed framework, the report said. There’s been no official word yet on the timeline for bringing the two together.
