Spain Secures Record Fourth European Crown with Victory Over England
After a cautious first half dominated by Spanish possession, Spain broke the deadlock just two minutes into the second half, despite England's single shot on target
Spain clinched a record fourth European Championship with a dramatic 2-1 victory over England in the Euro 2024 final on Sunday. Substitute Mikel Oyarzabal sealed the win with an 86th-minute goal, finishing off a swift break.
The match saw a cautious first half where Spain dominated possession, though England managed the only shot on target. The deadlock was broken two minutes into the second half when Lamine Yamal found space on the right and assisted Nico Williams for Spain’s opening goal. England equalized in the 73rd minute through substitute Cole Palmer, but Oyarzabal’s late strike ensured Spain's triumph.
Yamal, who had been subdued by England’s Luke Shaw in the first half, played a pivotal role in the second half. Despite Phil Foden’s volleyed attempt near the end of the first half, Spain’s Unai Simon kept it scoreless.
The match, held at Berlin’s Olympiastadion, featured an electronic-themed closing ceremony and notable attendees, including Prince William, Spain’s King Felipe, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, and Britain’s new Prime Minister Keir Starmer.
Spain’s victory in Berlin makes them the most successful team in European Championship history, having won all seven of their matches in the tournament.
