Reliance Jio Debuts JioSpaceFiber: India's First Satellite-Powered Nationwide Gigabit Broadband
Jio's Ambitious Vision: Enabling Connectivity across Land, Air, Sea, and Space, Pioneering Universal Access with the Launch of JioSpaceFiber
Reliance Jio, India's leading telecommunications provider, unveiled its groundbreaking JioSpaceFiber satellite broadband service at the India Mobile Congress. The launch marks India's inaugural satellite-powered gigabit fiber service, aimed at providing high-speed internet access to previously underserved areas in the country. The demonstration of Jio's extensive reach connected four remote locations across India: Gir in Gujarat, Korba in Chhattisgarh, Nabarangpur in Odisha, and ONGC in Jorhat, Assam.
Akash Ambani, Chairman of Reliance Jio Infocomm Ltd, emphasized the goal of JioSpaceFiber to bring broadband internet to millions of Indian homes and businesses. The service extends the company's reach to areas yet to be connected, contributing to the digital transformation of India. JioSpaceFiber offers gigabit-level access to online government, education, healthcare, and entertainment services, ensuring a fully inclusive digital society.
To expand the availability of Jio True5G, even in remote regions, the satellite network will provide mobile backhaul capacity. Partnering with SES, Jio leverages medium earth orbit (MEO) satellite technology, gaining access to SES's O3b and O3b mPOWER satellites. This positions Jio as a unique provider of reliable and scalable broadband services across India at competitive rates, supporting the government's Digital India initiative.
John-Paul Hemingway, Chief Strategy Officer at SES, expressed support for the Digital India initiative and the potential for digital transformation in rural areas through satellite-based services.
Reliance Jio already serves over 450 million Indians with high-speed broadband through fixed line and wireless connections. JioSpaceFiber complements Jio's existing broadband services, including JioFiber and JioAirFiber, ensuring reliable, fast, and low-latency internet and entertainment services regardless of location.
Mukesh Ambani, during the inaugural session, revealed that Jio deployed a 5G cell every 10 seconds, setting up over 1 million 5G cells across India's 22 circles. Jio contributed significantly to India's 5G capacity, providing one of the world's fastest 5G internet speeds with a 100% in-house 5G stack designed, developed, and manufactured by Indian talent. Jio's extensive 5G infrastructure, including services like JioFiber and JioAirFiber, aims to connect over 200 million previously unconnected homes and premises, positioning India as the broadband capital of the world and among the top three 5G-enabled nations with over 125 million 5G users.
