VVS Laxman eyed for coaching role in Indian cricket team

The tenure of former cricketing stalwart Rahul Dravid as the head coach of the Indian cricket team is drawing to a close, marking the end of a significant chapter in Indian cricket. Dravid's two-year stint, culminating with the ICC World Cup final, is not expected to extend further, prompting discussions about his replacement. Speculation loomed large regarding the continuation of the veteran cricketer after the Men in Blue's commendable performance in the recent World Cup.

Recent reports from The Times of India indicate that Rahul Dravid has attended his final match as India's coach during the ICC World Cup 2023 final and has communicated his decision not to pursue an extension in this pivotal role to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).

In what seems to be a handover between cricketing legends, VVS Laxman, the current head coach of the Suryakumar Yadav-led Indian T20 team, emerges as the prime contender to take over the mantle from Dravid. The TOI report suggests a seamless transition with Laxman possibly stepping into the coveted position. Laxman, known for his cricketing prowess, is reportedly eager to assume the role and has demonstrated his interest by engaging with the BCCI's top officials during the World Cup.

A BCCI source cited in the TOI report mentioned, "Laxman has expressed his keenness for the job. During the World Cup, Laxman travelled to Ahmedabad to meet the BCCI's top bosses in this regard. He's likely to sign a long-time contract as the Team India coach, and will certainly travel with the team in that capacity for the upcoming tour of South Africa, which will be his first as the full-time India head coach."

Looking ahead, Rahul Dravid appears to be exploring opportunities beyond Team India. The cricketing maestro is reportedly in discussions with an IPL team for a potential two-year contract, signaling a shift in focus after his tenure with the national team. However, clarity remains elusive regarding the future of other Indian coaches such as batting coach Vikram Rathour, bowling coach Paras Mhambrey, and fielding coach T Dilip, whose terms also concluded with Dravid's exit.

The TOI report, quoting inside sources, hints at the possibility of Laxman either retaining the existing coaching staff or opting to bring in fresh faces, aligning with the strategies employed by other coaches in similar transitions.
