Ola Electric has got regulatory nod for a new electric scooter aimed at India’s commercial mobility space, suggesting a potential foray by the company into the rapidly-growing commercial EV two-wheeler space as early as this quarter.

The homologation was granted by Automotive Research Association of India in February 2026 under the Central Motor Vehicle Rules, according to a government certification document.

According to a report by PTI, the approval is for an L1 category electric scooter, powered by a 4-kilowatt motor, capable of reaching a maximum speed of around 70 kilometres per hour.

The vehicle seems to be based on Ola Electric’s existing S1 platform but tweaked for commercial use, including food delivery, quick-commerce logistics and urban fleet operations, industry sources said.

Commercial EV Expansion:

Typically, certification is one of the last regulatory steps before launch, so the homologation suggests that the product may be nearer to commercial rollout.

The scooter configuration is understood to be focused on operating economics, range efficiency and fleet utilisation, important issues for delivery riders and commercial mobility operators, according to those involved in the development.

This comes at a time when fuel prices are rising due to supply disruptions around the Strait of Hormuz, adding further cost pressures on gig workers and fleet operators who are still using petrol-powered two-wheelers.

Delhi’s draft EV Policy 2026 proposes to end new internal combustion engine two-wheeler registrations in two years opening up a potential acceleration of electric fleet adoption in urban markets.

Industry analysts see the commercial EV two-wheeler segment as an important long-term growth opportunity on the back of high vehicle utilisation rates and faster replacement cycles in delivery and logistics fleets.

Commercial EV Entry:

Earlier this week, Bhavish Aggarwal in a post on X acknowledged the growing demand for electric two-wheelers among gig workers as fuel prices increase but did not directly mention the launch of a new commercial scooter.

Ola Electric declined to comment on the homologation or when the vehicle may launch.

The vehicle, if launched in the current quarter, will be Ola Electric’s formal entry into the growing commercial mobility EV market in India, ramping up competition in a segment increasingly seen as central to the future of electric vehicle adoption.
