Piyush Goyal Celebrates 166% Rise In India’s Toffee Exports As PM Modi Gifts Melody To Giorgia Meloni
Piyush Goyal highlighted a 166% rise in India’s toffee exports as PM Modi’s Melody toffee gift to Giorgia Meloni sparked viral online buzz.
India’s confectionery industry found itself in the spotlight on Wednesday after Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal highlighted a sharp increase in the country’s toffee exports, coinciding with Prime Minister Narendra Modi gifting a packet of Melody toffees to Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni during his visit to Rome.
Sharing export data on social media platform X, Goyal said India’s outbound shipments of toffees, caramels and similar confectionery products had risen nearly 166 per cent over the past 12 years.
“India’s TOFFEE TALE would surely be melody to the ears!” Goyal wrote while referring to the growth in exports.

Melody Goes Global:
According to the trade figures shared by the minister, confectionery export values increased from ₹49.68 crore in 2013-14 to ₹132 crore in 2025-26.
The minister said the data reflected rising global demand for Indian confectionery products as the country continues strengthening its export ecosystem across sectors.
The development coincided with Prime Minister Modi’s meeting with Giorgia Meloni in Rome, where a packet of Melody toffees unexpectedly became part of the diplomatic conversation online.
During the meeting, Modi gifted the toffees to Meloni, triggering fresh social media discussion around the viral “Melodi” meme, a trend created by combining parts of the two leaders’ surnames.

The meme has gained popularity online over recent months for highlighting the friendly and informal public interactions between Modi and Meloni.
Meloni later acknowledged the gift in a social media post, thanking Modi while further amplifying the online conversation surrounding the moment.
The interaction quickly attracted attention across social media platforms, with users linking the gesture to both the viral meme culture and India’s growing global consumer brand presence.
The meeting took place during the final leg of Modi’s five-nation diplomatic tour.

Culture Meets Commerce:
According to the Prime Minister, the two leaders held discussions covering trade, strategic cooperation and cultural relations between India and Italy.
“Upon landing in Rome, had the opportunity to meet Prime Minister Meloni over dinner, followed by a visit to the iconic Colosseum,” Modi wrote on X.
“We exchanged perspectives on a wide range of subjects,” he added.
The developments reflect how consumer brands, internet culture and diplomacy are increasingly intersecting in the digital era, turning informal moments into broader conversations around trade, exports and national branding.
For India’s food and confectionery sector, the spotlight also highlights how traditional consumer products are increasingly becoming part of the country’s larger global export and soft-power narrative.
