Delhi High Court Restrains Naman Finlease From Using ‘Zepto Finance’ Trademark

Delhi High Court has temporarily restrained non-banking financial company (NBFC) Naman Finlease and its directors from using the trademarks “Zepto” and “Zepto Finance” for their lending business after quick commerce firm Zepto filed a trademark infringement suit.

Zepto approached the court claiming that it owns registered word and device marks for “ZEPTO” and use of an identical mark by Naman Finlease could cause confusion among consumers.

The company told the court that it was aware of the alleged infringement when it began to receive legal notices and court summons that were in fact addressed to the NBFC operating under the name of Zepto Finance.

Trademark Dispute:

Zepto contended that its trade mark was a unique coined expression and was not descriptive. Zepto argued that the defendants had used the mark without having any rights registered in relation to “Zepto” or “Zepto Finance”.

The quick commerce platform also hinted at its foray into financial services with ZeptoCash, a digital payment wallet with in-app UPI functionality, launched in June 2025. It argued its brand reputation goes beyond its current trademark classes and asked for broader protection by citing the Supreme Court's "zone of legitimate expansion" principle.

At the hearing, Zepto also referred to a Chennai civil suit where a borrower has filed a suit for recovery of money in connection with loans allegedly given by “Zepto Finance”. The company argued that there is a possibility of confusion on the linkage between the two entities as the court summons in the case had Zepto’s corporate address.

Zepto also referred to the details of the case regarding personal loans of ₹27,000 and ₹52,000 with interest rates of 1% a day, and said such activities could harm its brand reputation.

The company also referred to ongoing criminal proceedings against Naman Finlease and its director and major shareholder, Sachin Mittal, citing allegations contained in an investigating agency’s status report of fraudulent loans and forged property documents.

After hearing the submissions, the Delhi High Court restrained Naman Finlease and its directors from using the disputed trademarks and directed that the domain name zeptofinance.com shall not be transferred till further orders.

The matter has been listed before the Joint Registrar on August 21, while the interim application will be heard by the court on November 30.
