Maggi launches edible wheat flour fork for eco-friendly dining

In 2020, Maggi launched the 'Desh ke liye 2 minute' initiative with the goal of making a big impact through small actions. One of the key aims of this initiative is to provide sustainable alternatives to single-use plastics. To align with this mission, Maggi has introduced an innovative edible fork made from wheat flour. This new fork is developed in partnership with Nestle R&D India, a subsidiary of Nestlé S.A., and an Indian start-up named Trishula. The edible fork enhances the enjoyable experience of eating Maggi Cuppa Noodles, offering a unique and eco-friendly solution.

Earlier, in 2023, Maggi also launched foldable, compostable forks in India. These forks were created in collaboration with Nestle’s Institute of Packaging Sciences in Lausanne, Switzerland, Kaneka India, and Nestle India R&D. The introduction of these foldable, compostable forks has the potential to reduce approximately 35 metric tons of plastic annually, showcasing Maggi's commitment to environmental sustainability.

Rajat Jain, the director of Foods at Nestle India, commented on the test launch of the edible forks, stating, “At Nestle, we are continuously seeking ways to build a better future for our consumers and the planet. The launch of the edible fork in Cuppa noodles marks a significant milestone in our commitment to environmental responsibility while pioneering consumer-centric initiatives. This innovation highlights our global R&D capabilities and the use of cutting-edge technology to develop a first-of-its-kind two-piece fork design. We are confident that this launch will set a strong precedent for greener solutions.”

Jagdeep Marahar, head of the Nestle R&D Centre India, added, “Our global packaging expertise, combined with the insights of our local packaging experts, allows us to discover and test innovative ways to reduce plastic usage. Our teams are constantly exploring novel packaging materials and cutting-edge technologies to optimize plastic use across the value chain and create sustainable alternatives that resonate with local consumers.”

The launch of the edible forks is planned as a limited period offering. Starting in May 2024, Maggi Masala Cuppa noodles with the edible fork will be available in major metro cities, priced at Rs 50 for a 79.5 g pack.
