Swiggy Instamart’s latest annual report reveals how quick commerce has become a daily habit for millions of Indians in 2024, with customers splurging on everything from milk and groceries to gold coins and high-end electronics. The report highlights the spending patterns and quirky purchases made by consumers from various cities, including some remarkable spenders.

Two users from Delhi and Dehradun alone spent over ₹20 lakhs on the platform, mostly stocking up on essential items such as atta, milk, and oil. This showcases the growing reliance on online services for everyday grocery shopping. Nationwide, the top items ordered were milk, curd, dosa batter, chips, and soft drinks. Interestingly, one in every 15 orders included milk, and fruits or vegetables were part of 1 in every 5 orders.

While everyday essentials dominated, there were some truly unique splurges across India. For example, a Mumbai customer spent more than ₹15 lakh on pet care products, while a Chennai shopper spent ₹1,25,454 on gadgets, including gaming earphones and a hair straightener. In Hyderabad, one resident spent ₹35,000 on mangoes during May, and during Dhanteras, an Ahmedabad shopper spent a record ₹8,32,032 on gold coins. There were also curious purchases like ₹4,60,000 worth of poker chips in Delhi for Diwali and a massive purchase of tonic water in Mumbai for ₹8,20,360.

The festive season also saw some interesting trends. Diwali brought in over ₹45 lakh in broom purchases, a nod to the tradition of Diwali cleaning, while for Raksha Bandhan, nearly 8 lakh rakhis were delivered. During Valentine’s Day, roses topped the list of last-minute romantic gifts. The late-night craving trend was also strong, with chips, ice cream, and cold drinks being popular between 10 p.m. and 4 a.m..

Swiggy Instamart also shared some city-specific trends. Bengaluru topped the charts for both puja essentials and party supplies, while Mumbai famously bought 4,500 kg of onions in just one hour. Hyderabad led in instant noodles purchases, spending ₹60 crore this year. Notably, Vizag saw a significant spend of ₹27,742 on toys, highlighting the platform’s appeal to families as well.

Behind the scenes, Kochi set a record for the fastest delivery, completing an order in just 89 seconds, while the smallest order of the year was a ₹3 pencil sharpener from Hyderabad. Even international users from Canada, the United States, and Singapore logged in to send essentials like milk and dosa batter to family members in India.
