Budweiser and NBA Bring Basketball Buzz to India

Budweiser’s Slam Dunk: NBA Partnership Ignites India’s Beer and Basketball Scene

Budweiser, one of the world’s most iconic beer brands, has made a bold move in India by teaming up with the National Basketball Association (NBA) for the first-ever BUDX NBA House event. Held in Mumbai on June 7-8, 2025, at the DOME, SVP Stadium, this collaboration marked a new era of experiential marketing, blending the excitement of basketball with music, entertainment, and youth culture. The partnership reflects Budweiser’s evolving strategy in India, aiming to create unforgettable moments for fans and position the brand as a cultural trendsetter.

Basketball Meets Beer: A Cultural Celebration

The BUDX NBA House was not just a sports event—it was a two-day celebration of basketball, music, and culture, coinciding with the NBA Finals. Fans enjoyed live musical performances, basketball-themed activities, meet-and-greets with NBA legends like Gary Payton and Derek Fisher, and even photo ops with the NBA Championship Trophy. The event also featured performances by the Sacramento Kings mascot and dance teams, making it a must-visit destination for India’s growing NBA fanbase.

Vineet Sharma, Vice President of Marketing and Trade Marketing at AB InBev India (Budweiser’s parent company), emphasized the synergy: “Budweiser stands for seizing opportunity, freedom, ambition, and authenticity. The NBA shares these values, making this collaboration a natural fit”. Both brands are rooted in Americana and represent aspiration, energy, and community.

India’s Beer Market: Growth, Premiumisation, and Changing Habits

India’s beer market is booming, valued at Rs 352.66 billion in 2022 and projected to double by 20301. AB InBev India, which owns Budweiser, holds a 21.6% market share, second only to United Breweries. The brand’s focus is on “premiumising” the market—encouraging consumers to trade up to higher-quality beers as incomes rise and urban lifestyles evolve.

Sharma noted that beer drinking is no longer taboo or limited to men. “Women are now equally proud to hold a bottle of Budweiser,” he said, highlighting a shift in social norms. Beer is becoming part of celebrations, birthdays, and even family milestones, with “the first drink with one’s dad” growing more common1.

The rise in “on-the-go” consumption is also notable, with cans making up nearly 50% of Budweiser’s portfolio. Post-pandemic, in-home drinking has increased, but out-of-home experiences at concerts, festivals, and now sports events like BUDX NBA House are fueling an “experiential economy”.

Digital-First Approach and Youth Focus

Budweiser’s marketing strategy in India is heavily digital, with 60-70% of its investments going to platforms like Meta, Google, and Spotify for precise targeting. The brand leverages social media, influencer collaborations, and cultural events to connect with consumers aged 21 to 40, aiming to build long-term loyalty from the first sip.

Sharma explained that, unlike other categories, alcohol brands can’t directly advertise sales online. Instead, Budweiser builds positive associations and influences purchase decisions through creative digital storytelling, especially on weekends and after-hours.

Beyond Beer: Budweiser Zero and Inclusive Experiences

Recognizing changing preferences, Budweiser has launched Budweiser Zero, a non-alcoholic beer with a green apple variant that’s become a hit among Indian consumers. This move caters to those who want the Budweiser experience without alcohol, reflecting a broader trend toward moderation and inclusivity1.

Budweiser’s events and experiences are designed to welcome everyone, with retail and bar spaces becoming more inclusive for women and diverse audiences. The brand’s goal is to make beer—and the culture around it—accessible and aspirational across metros and tier-two cities alike.

What’s Next for Budweiser in India?

The success of BUDX NBA House signals the beginning of more sports and cultural collaborations for Budweiser in India. The brand plans to expand its BUDX platform into other festival and sponsorship formats, creating more occasions for young Indians to celebrate with Budweiser.

As India’s beer market continues to grow and evolve, Budweiser is betting on premium experiences, digital engagement, and cultural partnerships to become the most iconic beer brand in the country.
