Starting in 2025, Amazon Prime Video is set to introduce password-sharing restrictions in India, marking a significant shift in how subscribers can use the streaming service. Under the new policy, Prime members will be able to log in to five devices, with a maximum of two TVs included.
At present, Amazon Prime allows users to log in to up to 10 devices without specific limits on TVs. However, the upcoming changes will restrict simultaneous logins to just five devices, including two televisions. This move mirrors similar steps taken by Netflix, which earlier implemented restrictions on password sharing.
Prime Video subscribers recently received an email outlining the new policy:
"As part of your Prime membership, you and your household are entitled to enjoy Prime Video on up to five devices. Starting January 2025, we are updating our usage terms in India to include up to two TVs as part of your five devices entitlement."
The company encourages users to manage their devices on the Settings page or purchase an additional Prime membership to enable streaming on more devices.
In addition to device limits, Amazon Prime Video will begin showing advertisements during TV shows and movies. The company assured subscribers that the ad load will be lighter compared to traditional television and other streaming platforms.
For those who prefer an uninterrupted experience, an ad-free tier will soon be introduced in India. While pricing details for the ad-free plan are not yet disclosed, the option aims to cater to viewers who value seamless entertainment.
These adjustments are part of Amazon’s broader strategy to enhance profitability and curb account sharing, a practice that streaming giants like Netflix have already targeted. The move comes as streaming platforms worldwide seek to balance growing content costs with subscription revenues.
