Zomato Refutes Viral Video Claiming Low Diwali Pay for Delivery Partner

A recent viral video showing a Zomato delivery agent’s pay for a Diwali shift has stirred up discussions online, prompting Zomato to address the claims and clarify the facts. The video, posted by delivery partner Ritik Tomar, showed him working in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh, from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. on the evening of Diwali, during which he earned Rs 316 after delivering eight orders. His story quickly gained traction, accumulating over 7 million views, with viewers showing both admiration for his dedication and concern over the earnings displayed.

However, Zomato disputed these claims, labeling the video as “inaccurate and disturbing” in a LinkedIn post. According to the company, while they appreciate the hard work delivery partners do during festive times, the figures in the video do not accurately reflect Zomato’s pay structure or the delivery partner’s earnings. The post further explained specific details about the situation:

  1. The delivery partner, Ritik Tomar, worked on October 30 for six hours and not on the day of Diwali, as some reports suggested.
  2. During that shift, he completed 10 deliveries and earned a total of Rs 695, which is significantly higher than the Rs 316 mentioned in the video.
  3. Comparatively, other delivery partners working around 10 hours in the same region reportedly earned between Rs 1,200 and Rs 1,300 that day.

Zomato emphasized that they offer competitive earnings to delivery partners, especially during holidays when they sacrifice time with family to keep services running. The post also highlighted that misreported figures and exaggerated narratives can negatively impact the motivation, dignity, and livelihood of delivery workers. “We urge users to avoid spreading misinformation,” Zomato stated, urging the public to respect the commitment of delivery agents who work diligently during festive times.

Ritik’s candid documentation of his experience resonated with many, shedding light on the challenges delivery agents face, especially during holidays when most people are at home celebrating. One viewer commented, “While we celebrate, some are working tirelessly just to ensure our meals arrive on time.”

In a recent initiative to better understand the realities of this role, Zomato’s CEO, Deepinder Goyal, took on the responsibilities of a delivery agent for a day. Alongside his wife, Grecia Muñoz, he experienced firsthand the day-to-day challenges of Zomato’s delivery partners, demonstrating a hands-on commitment to understanding their needs.

This situation reflects the complex dynamics of gig economy work and the sensitive balance between public perception and factual representation. Zomato’s response serves as a reminder of the importance of accurate information when it comes to the livelihoods of those in essential service roles. While the video ignited a necessary conversation on supporting delivery workers, Zomato’s response brings focus back to the need for responsible sharing of authentic and verified information in the digital age.

Zomato’s clarification aims to reassure customers of their fair pay practices while honoring the dedication of delivery partners, especially during peak times like Diwali. This transparency reinforces their commitment to the well-being of their partners, reminding all stakeholders of the essential role delivery agents play in keeping services running smoothly, even during the holidays.
