Misleading' adverts have been requested to be taken off by a child rights organization from Bournvita
The National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) has now requested that the corporation remove all of its "misleading" advertisements, days after a video by an influencer showcasing the "high" sugar content of Cadbury Bournvita went viral.
According to the NCPCR, a complaint has been filed saying that Bournvita, which markets itself as a health drink that encourages children's growth and development, really contains a high percentage of sugar and other ingredients that could be harmful to a child's health.
The NCPCR has requested Bournvita to remove any "misleading" ads, packaging, and labelling in the notice issued on Wednesday. According to the trending video, the health drink contains a lot of sugar and other ingredients that could be harmful to a child's health.
It demanded that Mondelez International examine and remove all "misleading advertisements, packaging and labels, and further send a detailed explanation/report to apprise the commission in the said matter within seven days".
"The commission in this regard observes that the product manufactured by your company is misleading the customers through its product packaging and advertisements," the child rights organization wrote in the warning it sent to Deepak Iyer, president-India of Mondelez International. The commission notes that the promises made for your product on its label, packaging, display, and in its advertisements are deceptive to the general public.
Influencer 'Foodpharmer' Revant Himatsingka bitingly mocked Bournvita's slogan "Taiyari Jeet Ki" (prepared for victory) in the viral video by renaming it "Taiyari Diabetes Ki" (preparation for diabetes). In response, Bournvita released a statement claiming that it has "earned the trust of consumers in India by being a scientifically formulated product that adheres to quality standards and complies with the laws of the land".
"We want to emphasize once more that the formulation was created scientifically by a group of dietitians and food scientists to provide the finest in flavor and health. All of our claims are transparent and supported by data, and each ingredient has received regulatory approval. For consumers to make educated decisions, all the required nutritional information is listed on the package, according to a Bournvita spokeswoman.
