Monika Shergill, Vice President of Content at Netflix India, described 2024 as a landmark year for the platform, celebrating unprecedented achievements across genres, regional languages, and storytelling formats.

Comedy Dominates and Appointment Viewing Thrives

Comedy emerged as the standout genre this year. The second season of The Great Indian Kapil Show became a weekly family ritual, introducing the concept of appointment viewing to the OTT world. Other notable comedy hits included Maamla Legal Hai and Tribhuvan Mishra: CA Topper, while comedian Vir Das announced an eagerly awaited return.

Indian comedy titles made a global impact, with five originals trending on Netflix’s Global Top 10 for TV and Film (Non-English), underscoring the universal appeal of Indian humor.

First Franchise Film and Bhansali’s Visual Masterpiece

Netflix’s first franchise film, Phir Aayi Haseen Dilruba, was a notable addition this year. Meanwhile, Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar stole the spotlight as a masterpiece of visual storytelling, released in 13 languages worldwide.

Heeramandi’s regal costumes and folk music sparked fashion trends and renewed interest in traditional music. It also dominated social media with viral fan theories, memes, and recreations of its most iconic scenes.

Characters like Shalini Passi from Fabulous Lives Vs Bollywood Wives became cultural phenomena, contributing to the platform’s success in non-fiction storytelling with hits like Modern Masters: SS RajamouliNayanthara: Beyond the Fairytale, and Yo Yo Honey Singh: Famous.

Regional Empowerment and Diverse Stories

Netflix India strengthened its support for regional languages like Tamil, Telugu, and Malayalam through thrilling dramas, impactful documentaries, and gripping mysteries. Titles such as Laapata LadiesIC 814: The Kandahar Hijack, and Imtiaz Ali’s Amar Singh Chamkila exemplified the platform’s dedication to diverse storytelling.

Innovations in Engagement and Format

In 2024, Netflix India introduced innovations like CTRL, a screen-first format starring Ananya Pandey, and interactive content such as LUDO King. The new ‘Moments’ feature allowed fans to save and relive iconic scenes, boosting audience engagement.
