For fiscal years 21-22, the television sector had a 25% increase in ad income.

According to the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India's (TRAI) annual report for FY 2021-22, India's television business grew by roughly 5%, reaching Rs 72,000 crore in 2021-22 from Rs 68,500 crore the previous fiscal.

According to TRAI, subscription revenues account for a significant portion of overall industry revenue, but they have decreased by 6.22%, decreasing from Rs 43,400 crore in 2020-21 to Rs 40,700 crore in 2021-22.

Nonetheless, ad revenue in the industry has climbed by 24.7% to Rs 31,300 crore in 2021-22, up from Rs 25,100 crore the previous year.

According to TRAI's annual report, which was given to the Rajya Sabha and the Lok Sabha, 2021-22 was another busy and exciting year for the broadcasting and cable services sector. According to the report, the last decade saw major changes in the dynamics of the Cable & Satellite (C&S) TV business.

On March 3, 2017, TRAI announced the new regulatory framework for broadcasting and cable services delivered via addressable systems. The aforementioned new regulatory framework took effect on December 29, 2018.

"The new regulatory framework was quite successful in establishing unified business procedures in the sector, leveling the playing field, introducing transparency in TV channel pricing, minimizing stakeholder litigation, and providing equal opportunity to smaller Multi System Operators" (MSOs). As a result, there was a significant reduction in both stakeholder disagreements and entry barriers. "The New Regulatory Framework for Broadcasting and Cable Services also allowed consumers the freedom to choose whatever television stations they wanted to watch," according to the research.

TRAI also stated that several key consultation papers on topics such as 'Promoting Local Manufacturing in the Television Broadcasting Sector,' 'Ease of Doing Business in the Telecom and Broadcasting Sector,' and 'Market Structure/Competition in Cable TV Services' were released during the fiscal year 2021-22. During the period 2021-22, no suggestions were made to the government because these consultation papers were still in the works.

According to the report, the TV broadcasting market would have around 350 broadcasters by the end of March 2022, with 42 of them being pay broadcasters. Furthermore, at the end of March 2022, there were 1764 (Multi System 3 Operators (MSOs) registered with the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MIB), 1 HITS operator, 4 pay DTH operators, and 20 IPTV operators, in addition to the public service broadcaster Doordarshan, which provided a free-to-air DTH service in India. Furthermore, according to MIB data, there were 81,706 cable operators registered in the country as of January 1, 2022.

The MIB has increased the total number of satellite TV channels allowed from 875 at the end of March 2018 to 898 by the end of March 2022. The number of SD pay TV channels has increased from 213 at the end of March 2018 to 248 at the end of March 2022. There will be 97 operational HD channels by the end of March 2022.

According to TRAI, pay DTH has a total active subscriber base of roughly 66.92 million at the end of March 2022, as reported by pay DTH operators. This is in addition to the DD Free Dish subscribers (free DTH services of Doordarshan).

There were four pay DTH service providers serving this customer base at the end of March 2022. It should be noted that previously (up until March 2019), the subscription statistic of total active subscribers included inactive and temporarily suspended users who had been inactive for no more than 120 days. However, according to the new Broadcasting and Cable TV Services regulatory framework, total active subscribers include members who have been inactive or temporarily suspended over the previous 90 days.
