Public service broadcasting should be voluntary: Broadcasters

According to rumours in the media, the Center has been asked to make it voluntary for TV stations to run public service programming.

In a letter, the Indian Broadcasting & Digital Foundation (IBDF) urged the government to either remove the requirement or offer financial aid and tax breaks to broadcasters who voluntarily screen public service programming.

According to earlier media reports, starting on January 1 the networks might start airing daily programming of national interest.

Officials from the MIB were also quoted as saying that before releasing specific rules, they will consult with broadcasters and other stakeholders.
