Instagram Prioritizes Short Videos Over Longform to Maintain Core Identity, Says CEO Adam Mosseri - Platform Focuses on Connecting Friends and Interests
Instagram will continue prioritizing short videos to preserve its core identity of connecting people with friends, according to Instagram head Adam Mosseri. In a recent video, Mosseri emphasized that longform videos could "undermine" this identity. While users can post videos up to one hour long and Instagram previously promoted longer content with IGTV, Mosseri argues that shortform videos are more aligned with the platform's mission.
Instagram’s primary objectives are to help users connect with friends and explore interests, often through shortform videos. Mosseri highlighted the "symbiotic" relationship between these two goals, as sharing short videos with friends fosters interaction. Conversely, longform videos (over 10 minutes) are seen as "less symbiotic" because they reduce content visibility from friends and decrease interaction. Therefore, Instagram will not pursue longform video formats, unlike TikTok, which is investing more in longer videos.
