OpenAI Appoints Former Uber India Chief Prabhjeet Singh as India Managing Director

OpenAI has appointed former Uber India & South Asia President Prabhjeet Singh as its Managing Director for India, reinforcing the company's focus on one of its fastest-growing and most strategic global markets.

Singh will join OpenAI in September and will report to Managing Director for Asia Pacific, Kiran Mani. He will be the most senior executive in the company in India, and will lead consumer growth, enterprise adoption, strategic partnerships, public policy engagement and overall business operations.

The appointment follows a period of increased investment by OpenAI in India, where the adoption of generative artificial intelligence has accelerated among consumers, startups, enterprises and government organisations. India is one of the company’s biggest user markets worldwide, and as such the company has been strengthening its local leadership and commercial presence.

India Expansion:

In his new role, Singh will also spearhead the growth of OpenAI’s partnerships across India’s AI ecosystem while enabling businesses, educational institutions and public sector organisations to deploy artificial intelligence solutions.

Singh joins OpenAI after nearly 11 years at Uber, most recently as President of India and South Asia, leading the company’s mobility business in India, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.

During his tenure, Uber expanded from ride-hailing to scale services such as Uber Auto, Uber Moto, and Uber Shuttle, and drive forward initiatives around electric mobility, affordability, and multimodal transportation. He also helped build partnerships with India’s digital public infrastructure, including the Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC).

Before joining Uber, Singh spent several years at McKinsey & Company where he was promoted to Associate Partner and advised clients on growth strategy and digital transformation. He is an IIT Kharagpur alumnus and an IIM Ahmedabad alumnus.

The appointment is part of a wider drive by OpenAI to build out its commercial and policy presence across Asia as competition in the artificial intelligence space heats up.

Over the past year, the company has expanded its enterprise offerings, ramped up hiring and deepened partnerships with governments and businesses in international markets. India is at the heart of that strategy, buoyed by its large developer community, rising AI adoption and growing digital economy.
