McDonald's India Addresses Fake Cheese Allegations, Invites Public to Kitchen Visit
McDonald's executives, Saurabh Kalra, MD for West and South, and Arvind R P, CMO, debunked the 'fake cheese' myth in a video, highlighting the company's commitment to authentic ingredients
In response to recent accusations regarding the use of fake cheese in their burgers, McDonald's India has taken a proactive approach by releasing a video asserting the authenticity of the ingredients in their food items.
In the video statement, Saurabh Kalra, Managing Director of McDonald's India West and South, and Arvind R P, Chief Marketing Officer, extended an invitation to the public, encouraging them to visit the company's kitchen and witness the quality assurance firsthand.
Kalra emphasized, "We use real cheese. We have never ever substituted any of our cheese-containing products with any other alternatives." Meanwhile, R P affirmed the company's commitment to food quality standards, stating, "We are as passionate about food as you. We have higher standards of food quality and adhere to all food laws. That's why I want to bust this myth about our cheese. Our cheese has 100% purity."
Several other key employees, including Aditya Kharwa, National HOD, Dr. Shatadru Sengupta, Chief Legal Officer, Pranil Bhamare, Head of Quality Systems, and Swarup Saigaonkar, Corporate Chef, provided endorsements for the food safety practices and overall product quality.
The controversy arose when the Maharashtra Food And Drug Administration (FDA) expressed concerns about a McDonald's outlet allegedly using substitutes for cheese in their burgers. This led to the suspension of the Ahmednagar outlet's license. The FDA claimed that the company was using 'cheese-like' products or cheese analogues rather than actual cheese. Following the submission of a compliance report by the chain, which verified the removal of the word 'cheese' from product names, their license was subsequently reinstated.
