Apple Rejects Meta’s AI Chatbot Llama Proposal for iPhone
Apple declines Meta’s Llama chatbot, opting for partnerships with OpenAI's ChatGPT and Google's Gemini due to privacy concerns and advanced technology preferences.
Apple Inc. has declined Meta Platforms Inc.'s proposal to integrate their AI chatbot, Llama, into the iPhone, as reported by Bloomberg. The discussions between Apple and Meta were brief and did not lead to an official partnership.
Apple is prioritizing the incorporation of OpenAI's ChatGPT and Alphabet Inc.'s Gemini into their devices. The decision against Meta was influenced by Apple's concerns over Meta's privacy practices and the belief that ChatGPT offers more advanced capabilities.
Google’s collaboration with Apple, particularly in Safari search, has bolstered their partnership, with future potential for integrating Gemini. Recently, Apple introduced its own AI features, Apple Intelligence, which includes tools for notifications, voice memo transcription, and personalized emoji creation.
Despite these advancements, Apple is open to further enhancing its chatbot technology and is considering options such as Anthropic's chatbot. The current partnership with OpenAI allows paying ChatGPT customers to use their subscriptions on iOS, creating potential revenue opportunities for both companies.
Apple and Meta, once collaborators on integrating Facebook into iOS, have since become competitors in areas such as AI, smart home technology, and mixed reality. Apple Intelligence will be integrated into iPhone, iPad, and Mac operating systems later this year, providing users with various chatbot options based on their preferences.
