Spotify Tests ‘Skip Ahead’ Feature for Podcasts, Raising Questions Over Ad Exposure

The rising value of Spotify’s advertising business has been thrown back into the spotlight with the streaming service’s latest quarterly results, despite a podcast feature being trialled that could let some users skip ads and sponsorship messages.

Spotify’s revenue stood at €4.78 billion in the second quarter of 2026, up 14% year over year. Monthly active users increased by 12% to 777 million. Premium subscribers were more than 300 million.

In this context, media reports say Spotify is testing a “Skip ahead” feature for podcasts, which allows some users to skip thru advertisements and sponsorship segments of episodes.

That test could have implications for podcast publishers and advertisers because podcast advertising isn’t traditional Spotify ad inventory. Publishers and creators can seamlessly insert host-read messages, sponsorships and other commercial segments into their episodes.

Previously, Spotify has allowed such podcast advertising to remain in episodes for Premium subscribers. The latest test raises questions about how the platform could affect delivery of advertising sold by publishers.

Who Controls The Ad Impression?

The difference between Spotify-owned advertising inventory and commercial messages inserted by podcast publishers matters more.

The more advertising impressions that can be delivered via the platform interface without involving publisher-sold advertising, the more the treatment of Spotify-controlled inventory varies.

This puts more emphasis on exposure reliability for advertisers . Traditionally, podcast advertising has been measured in terms of downloads, audience size and ad placements – but the industry is moving to more nuanced measurement of whether advertisements are actually heard and whether they lead to measurable outcomes.

As advertisers are demanding more accountability, podcast measurement companies are also working on tools to measure incrementality and causal impact.

Spotify Expands Automated Ad Business:

Spotify’s advertising strategy is becoming more automated buying and more access to podcast inventory.

The company has updated Spotify Ads Manager and Spotify Ad Exchange to enable advertisers to purchase podcast inventory via automated channels. In July, Spotify also launched podcast advertising via Amazon DSP.

The developments underline Spotify’s drive to turn podcast advertising into a bigger, more measurable and automated advertising ecosystem.
