Apple and Google in Talks to Integrate Gemini for iPhone's Generative AI Features
Apple plans to introduce generative AI features in iPhone 16, possibly integrating Google's Gemini AI chatbot for enhanced capabilities
In a recent report by Bloomberg's Mark Gurnman, it has been revealed that Apple and Google are engaged in negotiations regarding the utilization of Google's Gemini to power upcoming generative AI features on iPhones. This potential collaboration holds significant implications for Google's Gemini chatbot, which has faced recent controversies.
While Apple is actively developing AI features for its forthcoming iOS 18, primarily relying on its proprietary AI models, the focus seems to be on on-device functionality rather than cloud-based services, according to Gurnman's insights. Collaborating with Google could expand iPhone capabilities, particularly in generating images and crafting essays from singular prompts.
Contrary to widespread speculation about Apple's AI advancements, the ongoing negotiations suggest a potential gap in the company's AI technology compared to competitors. Despite internal testing of its large language model, Ajax, and the deployment of a chatbot named Apple GPT among employees, sources indicate that Apple's AI tools may lag behind those of Google and other industry players.
While discussions between Google and Apple are in progress, any formal agreement is not expected until at least June, coinciding with Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference. Gurnman suggests that Apple might consider alternative options for generative AI technology, such as partnerships with companies like OpenAI or Anthropic.
As both tech giants navigate these negotiations, the outcome could redefine the landscape of AI integration within Apple's ecosystem, influencing the future trajectory of iPhone features and functionalities.
