Sony to End Physical Game Disc Releases for New PlayStation Titles From 2028
Sony will stop releasing physical discs for new PlayStation games from January 2028 as it shifts to a fully digital distribution model. The company will also phase out the PlayStation Store for PS3 and PS Vita by 2027.
Sony will stop making physical game discs for all new PlayStation titles starting in January 2028, a major move to a fully digital distribution model.
According to reports, from January 2028, all new PlayStation games will only be available via digital distribution, through the PlayStation Store and authorised retailers selling digital game codes.
The company said games already released or scheduled to be released on physical discs before the deadline will still be available for purchase in those formats.

Digital Transition:
The move is a sign of changing consumer behaviour. Sony said digital downloads made up about 80 percent of full-game software sales in fiscal 2025, suggesting a shift to buying games online rather than in physical form.
The change is expected to lower the costs of manufacturing, packaging and logistics involved in making and distributing game discs, while simplifying global game releases.
But the shift could also increase demand for bigger console storage, as gamers will be forced to download full game files rather than installing games from physical discs.
In addition to moving to digital-only releases, Sony also announced it will phase out the PlayStation Store on legacy PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita platforms.
In a statement, the company said the online stores for both consoles will begin closing down in select markets later this year and then expand globally through 2027.

Store Shutdown:
Sony announced it is closing the shops because the old hardware can't keep up with the security demands of the modern PlayStation Network payment infrastructure.
The first wave of closures will start in Mexico, Honduras and Nicaragua in August 2026 and then expand to more countries across Latin America and the Middle East. The PS3 and PS Vita PlayStation Store will be closing in all remaining territories by July 2027
After the shutdown, users will be unable to purchase new games or downloadable content on the affected platforms. Sony said customers will still have access to previously purchased games and digital content for download for the foreseeable future.
The move underscores Sony’s larger strategy to grow its digital ecosystem as game distribution continues to move away from physical media and toward online shopfronts.
