Meta Appoints Alex Schultz as First Chief Data Officer, Elevates Denise Moreno to CMO

Meta has named long-time executive Alex Schultz as its first Chief Data Officer (CDO), establishing a new leadership role to bolster the company’s data infrastructure and grow the role of artificial intelligence in decision-making across its business.

The company also named Denise Moreno, former Vice President of Consumer Marketing and Growth, as Chief Marketing Officer (CMO), succeeding Schultz.

Schultz, who joined Meta in 2007, announced the leadership change in a LinkedIn post. He’s been at the helm of the company’s global marketing, analytics and growth functions for almost two decades and was a key architect of scaling Meta’s consumer platforms and advertising ecosystem.

AI Data Strategy:

In his new role, Schultz will lead Meta’s data strategy, which focuses on better ways to organise, interpret and apply data across the company’s products and AI systems.

One of his first priorities will be to build a unified “semantic layer” across Meta’s data infrastructure, Schultz said. The initiative is meant to help AI systems better understand, interpret and contextualise information that exists in the company's massive data warehouses, enabling more consistent insights and decision making.

The traditional approaches to creating automated insights for both consumers and businesses are being pushed to their limits as artificial intelligence plays an increasingly central role in analytics and product development, Schultz said.

Leadership Reshuffle:

Meta’s growing focus on integrating AI into its internal operations and consumer-facing products includes the Chief Data Officer role. With the company’s continued heavy investment in generative AI, recommendation systems and AI-powered assistants, data quality and governance are becoming ever more important strategic priorities.

Denise Moreno joins as Chief Marketing Officer, leading Meta’s global marketing organisation. She was previously Vice President, Consumer Marketing and Growth leading marketing across Meta’s family of apps and driving user growth strategies.

The changes in leadership come as Meta continues to reorganise its executive structure around artificial intelligence, data infrastructure and long-term product innovation, making data management a core function that supports the company’s next phase of AI-driven growth.
