Meta Platforms has announced a new feature called “Incognito Chat” for its AI services on WhatsApp and the Meta AI app, aimed at enabling private conversations with its AI assistant without storing chat history or making conversations visible to the company.

According to Meta, chats created through Incognito Chat are processed inside a secure environment designed so that even Meta itself cannot access the messages or AI responses generated during the session.

Meta Pushes Private AI Chats:

According to a news report by the Business Standard this launch comes as AI chatbots are increasingly being used for more personal and sensitive conversations, including discussions related to health, finances, work and private advice. Meta said the feature is intended to provide users with a more private way to interact with AI tools without concerns around long-term storage or later review of conversations.

According to the company, starting an Incognito Chat creates a temporary AI session visible only to the user. Messages are not saved and disappear automatically once the session ends.

Meta also stated that unlike some existing private or incognito AI modes offered by other platforms, its system is designed so that neither incoming user prompts nor outgoing AI responses can be accessed by the company itself.

The feature is powered by Meta’s “Private Processing” technology, which the company describes as a protected cloud-based system that allows AI requests to be processed without Meta or WhatsApp being able to read the content.

Meta Expands Private AI Features:

Meta said the system is built on a Trusted Execution Environment (TEE), creating an isolated environment for processing AI interactions securely. According to the company, messages are encrypted during processing and are not stored once the request or session is completed.

The company added that only limited data necessary for processing is shared with the system. For AI features requiring live information, Meta AI may also search the web using generated search queries that are not linked to a user’s account.

Alongside Incognito Chat, Meta also revealed plans for another upcoming WhatsApp feature called “Sidechat,” which will also use Private Processing technology. The feature is expected to allow Meta AI to assist users within active WhatsApp conversations by understanding the context of chats without interrupting the main conversation thread.

Meta said Sidechat will roll out in the coming months.

The announcement highlights how major technology companies are increasingly focusing on privacy-focused AI experiences as AI assistants become more integrated into messaging platforms and everyday communication tools.
