Google Unveils Gemini: Retires Bard and Launches Advanced Language Model
Gemini, a paid application, is set to launch in 40 languages. As of now, it is available exclusively in English, with plans for future expansions
In a strategic move, Google bids farewell to its AI platform Bard, introduced a year ago to rival OpenAI's ChatGPT. The tech giant announces the rebranding of Bard to Gemini, aligning it with the family of Large Language models.
Alongside this transition, Google introduces Gemini Ultra 1.0, also known as Gemini Advanced, representing its most sophisticated large language model to date. Available through a monthly subscription at $19.9, Gemini Advanced competes directly with ChatGPT's advanced model, ChatGPT Plus, priced at $20 per month.
Sundar Pichai, CEO of Google and Alphabet, shared the news in a blog post on Thursday, emphasizing Bard's evolution into Gemini. Pichai stated, "To reflect the advanced technology at its core, Bard will now simply be called Gemini. It’s available in 40 languages on the web and will soon be accessible through a new Gemini app on Android and the Google app on iOS."
Gemini Advanced, boasting superior reasoning, instruction-following, coding, and creative collaboration abilities, is positioned as an enhanced version. Pichai highlighted its potential as a personalized tutor, catering to individual learning styles, or a creative partner aiding in content strategy and business plan development.
While initially available in over 150 countries and territories, Gemini Advanced will exclusively support English, with plans for future expansion into Japanese and Korean languages.
Pichai underscored Gemini Advanced's capabilities, claiming its ability to surpass human experts in Massive Multitask Language Understanding (MMLU). Covering 57 subjects, including math, physics, history, law, medicine, and ethics, the model assesses knowledge and problem-solving proficiencies.
In tandem with these changes, Google also announces the sunset of the Duet AI brand, previously associated with AI features in Workspace. These features will now be integrated into the Gemini brand, consolidating Google's advanced language models under the Gemini umbrella.
