Google Launches Wallet Feature for Kids With Parental Spending Controls

Ahead of back-to-school time, Google is growing its family-focused financial products with the rollout of a new Google Wallet feature that lets parents in the United States set up and control a safe digital balance for kids and teens under 18.

The new feature is designed to help young users develop healthy financial habits while giving parents full visibility and control over their children’s spending.

Google Pay is now rolling out to kids to pay with Android smartphones and Wear OS devices that support NFC for contactless transactions at any location that accepts it. The feature enables them to make everyday purchases with parents keeping an eye on things via Google’s Family Link platform.

Parental Controls:

The feature aims to strike a balance between giving children more financial independence and allowing parents to maintain appropriate safeguards over spending, the company said.

The launch also expands Google’s footprint in the growing market for digital financial tools for families. The offering puts Google Wallet in competition with services like Apple Cash Family, and also fintech platforms like Greenlight and FamZoo, which provide prepaid debit card solutions along with financial literacy tools for kids.

This builds on Google’s earlier rollout of supervised digital payment capabilities for kids in some international markets. The company is also expanding its family account management and digital payments ecosystem by embedding the functionality right into Google Wallet and Family Link.

The feature is currently only available to users in the United States and Google has not announced a timeline to roll out to other markets. The launch comes as tech firms keep launching family-focused payment features that combine digital convenience with parental controls and financial education.
