Fraganote Launches ‘Cutting Chai’ Perfume Campaign With Dolly Chaiwala

D2C fragrance brand Fraganote has launched ‘Cutting Chai’, a fragrance inspired by the Indian roadside tea culture, and has rolled out a Bollywood-style campaign featuring internet personality Dolly Chaiwala.

The brand has positioned the launch as a celebration of Indian pop culture, drawing inspiration from the country’s everyday chai ritual to create what it describes as a gourmand fragrance rooted in familiar local aromas.

The perfume opens with ginger and cardamom, then follows with brewed tea and ends with warm woody notes. Inspired by vintage Hindi film posters, the packaging is bright red and yellow with a chai kettle, a tapri-style glass and the iconic phrase, “Chai bina chain kahan re.”

Cultural Storytelling:

To introduce the fragrance with a humorous touch, Fraganote has launched an ad film featuring Dolly Chaiwala, who became a global sensation for serving tea to Bill Gates and preparing tea in a theatrical manner.

The film revolves around a tongue-in-cheek kidnapping scheme where Fraganote Co-founder and CEO Garima Kakkar and investor Arjun Vaidya enlist Dolly to create the perfume in a fictional lab. The campaign pays homage to 1990s Bollywood cinema with references to iconic movie dialogues, television dramas and internet memes.

The campaign also features a rare collaboration within India’s startup ecosystem with V3 Ventures founder and investor Arjun Vaidya featuring in the ad, alongside the founders, instead of staying behind the scenes.

Commenting on the launch, Garima Kakkar said the brand wanted to tap into the emotional connect Indians have with chai rather than offer a polished or westernised version of it. The campaign taps familiar cultural symbols that resonate with everyday consumers, she said.

Classic Bollywood films are a common nostalgia for all of us', said co-founder Arjun Anand. "That was the inspiration for the creative concept. We are creating a category by combining product innovation with culturally relevant storytelling', added Arjun Vaidya.

With 'Cutting Chai', Fraganote aims to differentiate itself in the fragrance market by drawing inspiration from distinctly Indian experiences, blending scent, storytelling and internet culture into a single brand campaign.
